Epic Games and Google have reached a proposed settlement to expand Android app store access globally through June 2032. The agreement would allow rival app stores to operate inside Google Play with reduced fees and improved payment options.
New Terms and Fee Structure
If approved, developers could offer alternative app stores as 'Registered App Stores', installable with one click. Google Play fees would drop to 20% or 9% depending on purchase type. Importantly, third-party billing options could incur zero fees in many cases.
Implications for Developers and Users
This settlement offers developers the option to display side-by-side payment methods. Users can choose between Google Play Billing and third-party solutions without security pop-ups. Google's move is framed as a step toward greater openness.
If Judge James Donato approves, Android will be the first major mobile OS to fully integrate competing app stores, marking a significant shift in mobile software distribution.
