Google Tests New Widget Feature for Android Auto

29 Oct 2025

Google is working on a new Android Auto feature called "Earth" that allows drivers to add widgets to their car's dashboard. This feature was uncovered in an APK teardown of Android Auto version 5.6.154404-release.daily.

Widget Customization on Android Auto

The "Earth" feature enables users to place widgets on the side of the screen rather than in the taskbar. This enhances control over app display on the home screen. A "Customize Earth" option will be available in Android Auto settings for users to pick and size widgets.

Development and Functionality

The feature is in early development stages, with Android Authority testing it on select devices. Currently, only one home-screen widget can be active at a time. Choosing a new widget replaces the previous one, and not all widgets, especially those for horizontal layouts, function correctly. Performance and optimization issues have been reported.

Future Implications

Google emphasizes driver safety, hinting that this feature's behavior and restrictions may evolve before the official rollout. These changes highlight a push towards improved customization and user experience in Android Auto.
