Google's Android XR companion app for smart glasses has appeared in the latest Android Canary builds within Android Studio. The app, identified as com.google.android.glasses.companion, is targeted at Android XR smart glasses and shows a generic setup interface pending hardware pairing.
Features and Specifications
Upon installation, the app reveals a power switch and a settings page tailored for media handling. Users can import camera footage manually, automatically, or while charging. Configurations include video clip lengths from 30 seconds to three minutes, with capabilities of 1080p capture and an experimental 3K mode. An audio alert is programmed to warn when the front LED is obstructed, ensuring proper functioning.
A notable feature is "Conversation detection", branded as Gemini. This function silences notifications during conversations without external data transmission. Additionally, the app suggests adaptable display settings, such as brightness and "audio-only" mode.
Future Hardware Integration
The first Android XR glasses from Samsung are slated for release in 2026. These findings suggest that Samsung's upcoming hardware will heavily integrate Google's companion app, signifying a close software partnership between the two entities.
