Russia has blocked Snapchat and restricted Apple's FaceTime, citing their misuse in organizing terrorist activities. Roskomnadzor, the state internet regulator, confirmed Snapchat's unavailability in Russia began on 2023-10-10.
Expanded Digital Controls
The Russian government is broadening digital control by promoting the state-backed MAX app, developed by VK. MAX is now mandatory on new phones and tablets sold in Russia since September, offering messaging, government services, and payments. Authorities have stated that MAX will share user data with them on request.
Broader Social Media Restrictions
Other Western platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube have also faced restrictions or throttling. Officials have warned of potential bans on WhatsApp if Meta does not share information related to fraud and terrorism investigations. Additionally, VPN services are increasingly being blocked as part of Russia's tightened online controls amid domestic security concerns.
