Valve's Steam Frame Expands VR and PC Gaming Options

14 Nov 2025

Valve has unveiled the Steam Frame, a new hybrid VR headset that aims to expand gaming possibilities for users by allowing them to play both virtual reality and PC games seamlessly. The device represents a successor to Valve's Index and seeks to provide a smooth experience by integrating various technologies to support a wide range of games.

Device Features and Compatibility

The Steam Frame uses an ARM-based Snapdragon chip, different from traditional PC VR headsets that typically utilize x86 architecture. This choice enables the device to run Android VR games natively while also supporting traditional PC games through compatibility layers. Valve is combining FEX, an ARM compatibility framework, and Proton, which is designed to allow Windows games to run on Linux-based systems like SteamOS. This integration ensures that users can access a substantial portion of their Steam library.

Enhanced User Experience

With a focus on user experience, Valve wants the Steam Frame to allow players to easily access and run games. Early tests with titles like "Hades 2" have shown promising results with no significant emulation issues, offering a user interface similar to that of the Steam Deck. The device's conventional gamepad-style controllers aim to improve accessibility for both VR and non-VR games.

Valve also plans to distribute developer kits to assess and address compatibility issues, as was done with the Steam Deck. This open approach underscores the company's commitment to maximizing available game options rather than concentrating on mixed reality capabilities.

Flexibility and Connectivity

The Steam Frame is designed to be an open platform, much like the Steam Deck, allowing users to install their preferred software. It includes a 2 x 2.5Gbps expansion port for those who wish to explore mixed reality using third-party hardware. However, the primary focus remains on gaming rather than mixed reality features.

Overall, Valve's Steam Frame signifies a step toward a more versatile and hardware-agnostic gaming experience, emphasizing ease of use and a broadening of the gaming landscape.
