Google Play Store Requires Age Verification for App Downloads

29 Oct 2025

Google Play Store users in the U.S. must now verify their age to continue downloading certain apps, following new regulations in states like Texas, Utah, and Louisiana. This age verification process is implemented to ensure compliance with state laws aimed at protecting minors from accessing age-sensitive content.

New Age Verification Process

Google has introduced various options for users to verify their age, including uploading an ID, taking a selfie, using a credit card, or utilizing a third-party service, verifymy.io. The rollout began and is gradually expanding to cover other regions, including the entire United States. Users can also manually initiate verification in their settings, although not all methods are available everywhere.

Regulatory Compliance and Privacy Concerns

The age verification requirement stems from newly passed laws in several U.S. states, which mandate that app stores must confirm user ages before allowing downloads of apps containing age-sensitive content. Google has stated that this measure aligns with legal requirements, and similar regulations are anticipated in additional states like California. However, this move has raised concerns among users regarding data privacy, the potential misuse or leak of personal information, and reports of users being locked out after unsuccessful verification attempts.
