Google Dialer's New Look Sparks Mixed Reactions

27 Aug 2025

The recently updated Google Dialer app showcases a significant overhaul in its visual and functional elements, blending a Material 3 Expressive makeover with an array of new features. Known for its pioneering contact management, the latest update offers users innovative Calling Cards, reminiscent of Apple's Contact Posters. The new design swaps the traditional circular contact thumbnails for full-screen images complemented by stylized text, adding a modern and personalized touch to incoming calls.

A recent user poll conducted on the app shed light on the reception of this comprehensive redesign. Results showed that 50% of the 18 respondents expressed strong approval, declaring themselves fans of the changes. Meanwhile, 33% of participants appreciated certain aspects, and 17% did not find the redesign appealing at all. Interestingly, none of the respondents declared indifference to the update, indicating that the changes have not gone unnoticed.

Mixed Feedback and Challenges

Despite the excitement generated by the new look, users have flagged several challenges with the upgraded Google Dialer. One of the prevalent concerns revolves around lag issues, particularly noticeable when tapping the speakerphone button. Additionally, some users have reported frustrations with the app's navigation, describing it as cumbersome, with contacts being harder to reach.

Moreover, actions deemed crucial by users, such as putting a call on hold, are perceived to be inconveniently placed behind a three-dot menu. This choice in design has sparked debate over the usability and intuitiveness of the new layout. The transition from a swipe-up to a swipe-right gesture for answering calls has also been highlighted, with some users finding this change unfavorable.

On the other hand, the app's revamped design is appreciated by those who favor larger touch targets, viewing it as an advantageous feature for ease of use. However, critics argue that the design is wasteful or, in some cases, downright 'trashy.'

As the Google Dialer continues to evolve, the recent design update brings both enthusiasm and critique. Whether these changes are indeed a smart upgrade or a misstep remains a matter for debate. Users are encouraged to engage further with the poll and provide their insights as Google considers possible refinements.
