WhatsApp will soon allow users in Europe to message contacts on other apps as part of Meta's compliance with the Digital Markets Act. This initiative begins with integrations with BirdyChat and Haiket, starting 2025-11-15.
Integration Details
Initially, the rollout will support text, image, voice, video, and file exchanges between WhatsApp, BirdyChat, and Haiket users. Users can opt in via a new settings toggle. They will have the option to organize these communications within a separate 'Third-party chats' folder or integrate them into their primary inbox.
Security Standards
Meta assures users that end-to-end encryption will be maintained. The partner apps are required to adhere to WhatsApp's security criteria, ensuring the protection of user data.
Impact on Messaging Apps
This change dismantles WhatsApp's previous 'walled garden' approach, potentially diminishing the necessity for multiple messaging platforms. Users should be prepared for possible changes in privacy terms specific to third-party interactions.
