Despite ongoing US government scrutiny, Chinese apps dominated both Android and iOS download lists in the United States in 2025. According to Sensor Tower data cited by CNBC, major apps like TikTok, Temu, CapCut, and Shein led the charts.
TikTok and ByteDance Developments
On 2026-01-23, ByteDance entered a joint venture to manage its American unit, forming TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC with US partners. This move was in response to the Trump administration's pressure and aims to prevent a shutdown of TikTok, an app used by around 200 million Americans. In download rankings for 2025, TikTok was the second-most-downloaded app in the US.
Other Chinese App Performances
CapCut, ByteDance's video-editing app, improved its position to fourth on download charts, up three spots from 2024. E-commerce app Temu finished seventh, slipping from first in the previous year. Although Shein did not rank in the overall top 10, it was the most downloaded apparel app. Both Temu and Shein faced challenges due to changes in US trade policy, specifically the end of the de minimis duty-free rule and increased tariffs.
Market Insights
Analysts attribute the success of Chinese apps to their compelling algorithms and personalization features which resonate with US consumers. Liang Chen noted that these apps have adapted quickly to market changes through innovative logistics and merchant strategies. Experts also suggest that US consumers prioritize content engagement and value over concerns about app origin.
