Meta Expands Global Rollout of Teen Accounts on Platforms

25 Sep 2025

Meta, the tech giant behind platforms like Facebook and Messenger, is taking steps to enhance the online safety and privacy of younger users by expanding its dedicated teen accounts globally. First introduced a year ago and initially rolled out in the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia, these accounts are now accessible worldwide.

The initiative, aimed at users aged 13 to 15, makes it mandatory for younger teens to have teen accounts. Meta leverages advanced artificial intelligence to detect and prevent falsified ages during account creation, ensuring compliance with the age requirements.

Enhanced Parental Controls

At the core of these teen accounts lies a suite of enhanced parental controls designed to provide guardians with better oversight of their children’s online interactions. Parents can supervise their children's app usage more meticulously, monitor screen time, and view messaging interactions. The accounts also incorporate stricter privacy and safety settings, limiting contact with unknown adults to further safeguard young users against potential online threats.

These measures are part of Meta’s ongoing commitment to addressing concerns around child safety online, especially amidst growing scrutiny and subsequent lawsuits. Meta’s efforts are seen in its strategic steps to close safety gaps, reinforcing its platforms against misuse.

Partnerships and Programs

In addition to the enhanced parental features on existing platforms, Instagram, another subsidiary of Meta, is extending its “school partnership program” across the United States. This initiative, initially piloted in selected areas, empowers middle and high schools to report incidents of bullying and other concerning behaviors occurring on the platform. By enabling US-based schools to sign up for this program, Meta aims to foster safer online environments within educational communities.

The decision by Meta to expand these measures on a global scale reflects the company's recognition of its responsibility towards its younger user base—a demographic that boasts hundreds of millions of account holders across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The teen accounts and associated safety features demonstrate Meta's proactive approach in adapting to the dynamic landscape of digital interactions, responding to the unique challenges faced by teens and their guardians in navigating social media.

As more regions gain access to these teen accounts, Meta's efforts symbolize a significant step towards building a more secure online ecosystem, one that aligns with the evolving expectations of parents and guardians worldwide while empowering teens to engage responsibly and safely on the digital platforms they frequently use.
