Android 15 introduces app archiving, allowing users to free up storage space without fully uninstalling applications. This new feature is now available globally for devices running Android 15 and above.
Archiving Process and Benefits
Archiving an app removes its code, resources, and temporary files, leaving only login information, settings, and saved data intact. This results in a lightweight archived version, which retains just the icon and essential data. To restore, users can download the latest app version from the Play Store, preserving progress and logins.
- Archiving is initiated via Settings > Apps > Archive.
- Archived icons appear dimmed with a cloud icon.
- Space savings can be significant: 387 MB to 144 MB in one example.
Automatic Archiving Setup
Users can enable automatic archiving through the Play Store by navigating to profile > Settings > General > Automatically archive apps. Specific apps can be excluded by disabling Manage app if unused on their app info page. Note that some system or preinstalled apps cannot be archived.
Implications and Considerations
Archiving serves as a middle ground between uninstalling and retaining an app, offering convenience by freeing up space without losing data. However, it does not provide as much space savings as a full uninstallation would.
