Android 17 to Introduce Native App Lock for Pixel Users

01 Jan 2026

Google is developing a native App Lock feature for Android 17, which promises to enhance security for Pixel users. This new functionality would allow apps to be secured with Face Unlock, fingerprint authentication, or a passcode, according to code discovered in recent Canary builds.

Functionality and Features

The anticipated App Lock would build upon Android 15's Private Space, which isolates apps using separate user profiles. The current system lacks the convenience of biometric unlocking for individual apps. In contrast, the new feature would directly integrate with Android's default launchers, reducing reliance on third-party security applications.

Currently, Pixel owners use these third-party apps for added security, while competitors like Samsung and Xiaomi already provide similar features. This native integration could significantly enhance the user experience for Pixel device owners.

Potential Impact and Timing

While the presence of the App Lock code in Canary builds suggests active development, it does not guarantee immediate implementation. Google may choose to delay this feature to later in the Android 17 release cycle or even to Android 18. If realized, the App Lock would bring Pixel devices in line with the security offerings of other major Android and iOS devices.

This development signals Google's continued commitment to closing privacy gaps in its Android ecosystem, offering a potentially meaningful upgrade to overall device security.
