Eligible Android users could soon receive payments from a $700 million settlement related to the Google Play Store. The settlement stems from a lawsuit spearheaded by New York Attorney General Letitia James, alleging unfair competition practices by Google.
Settlement Details
The lawsuit accuses Google of suppressing competition and inflating app prices by charging fees up to 30% on the Google Play Store. As of now, $630 million has been allocated to a settlement fund. Eligible individuals include those who paid for apps or in-app content between 2016-08-16 and 2023-09-30.
Receiving Your Payment
Automatic payments could be made to PayPal or Venmo accounts linked to the Google Play account email. If these accounts are unavailable or if payments are not received, a supplemental claims process will be established. Eligible users may receive a minimum of $2 or more, depending on total purchases. Legal notices began distribution on 2023-12-02.
Opt-Out and Final Approval
The final approval hearing is set for 2026-04-30. If approved, automatic payments may commence with manual claimants waiting longer. Users intending to exclude themselves should file an opt-out by 2026-02-19 to retain the right to sue independently. This isn't Google's first significant settlement, noting a previous $1.4 billion settlement in Texas and involvement in a separate $5 billion lawsuit.
