Android 17 Update to Introduce App Lock for Security

11 Dec 2025

Google is reportedly planning to introduce a native App Lock feature with Android 17, enabling Pixel and Samsung users to secure individual apps without using third-party lockers. This development was noted in the Android Canary 2512 pre-release code.

App Lock Features and Benefits

The anticipated App Lock feature aims to improve security by allowing users to lock specific apps using the phone's existing biometric unlock system. Unlike the current Private Space setting, this feature wouldn't change the regular user interface. Users could share their devices more freely with children, friends, or colleagues without risking exposure of sensitive content.

Release Expectations and Industry Impact

While some manufacturers have already implemented similar security functions, Google's official App Lock could standardize the process across Android 17 devices. This update is not expected for Android 16, aligning with Google's privacy-focused enhancements. By integrating such a feature directly into the system, Google could eliminate the need for third-party app lockers, streamlining the user experience.

Anticipated Release Date

Though not yet officially confirmed by Google, the new App Lock feature is likely to arrive with the full release of Android 17. By focusing on user privacy and security, Google continues to elevate the Android ecosystem amidst increasing demands for data protection.
