Google has initiated the migration of reminders from Google Keep to Google Tasks, impacting how users receive notifications and manage reminders. A prompt within the Keep app now informs users that "Reminders are now Google Tasks." This change marks a significant update in Google's approach to task management across its services.
Migration Process and Features
Reminders created in Google Keep now automatically appear in Google Tasks with a "From Keep" label. Users can manage these reminders by viewing, editing date/time, or marking them complete in Google Assistant, Calendar, Keep, and Tasks. Notifications for reminders will now be handled by Calendar and Tasks, as Keep notifications will cease. Crucially, location-based reminders are not supported by Tasks, with location information being moved into the description field.
Editing and Deleting Limitations
The transition introduces some limitations in editing capabilities. Titles of reminders can only be altered within Calendar or Tasks; changes made in Keep will not sync across platforms. Additionally, deleting a reminder in Keep allows the option to remove either the note alone or both the note and reminder, whereas Task deletions do not offer such flexibility.
Deployment and User Impact
The updated reminder management system is being rolled out server-side and is already visible to some users. As of now, some accounts are displaying the changes, noted by the author in Keep Notes version 5.25.461.02.90. This update, while consolidating reminders, presents challenges in maintaining location-based capabilities.
