An app known as Mobdro Pro IP TV Plus VPN is spreading Klopatra malware across Europe, affecting Android devices. Security experts have raised alarms about the app, which is masquerading as a free IPTV and VPN service.
App Spotting and Spread
The Klopatra malware was first detected in late August and, by late September, had infected thousands of devices. The majority of these infections have been reported in Italy and Spain. The app can access users’ financial accounts and potentially take control of their Android devices.
User Advisory and Risks
The app, which is not available on the Google Play Store, is distributed via sideloading. Experts strongly advise Android users to check their devices for the presence of Mobdro Pro IP TV Plus VPN, also known as Modpro IP TV Plus VPN, and delete it immediately. While VPNs can offer privacy protections, users are warned that free VPN applications might pose risks, including advertising or malicious activities.
