Google has refined its Translate app to work seamlessly with Samsung's upcoming smart glasses, powered by Android XR technology. This enhancement includes a new 'Glasses' option for audio playback within the Live Translate feature, discovered in version 9.26.46.833192481.11 of the app.
Live Translate Upgrade
The Live Translate feature currently operates only when the app is actively in use on a smartphone. Google is upgrading it to function in the background with a persistent notification, enhancing its usability on smart glasses.
Previously, Live Translate had three audio playback options: Headphone, Mute, and Speaker. The new addition of a 'Glasses' option suggests Google is tailoring the app for compatibility with Android XR devices, such as smart glasses.
Samsung's Strategic Moves
Samsung is expected to be a frontrunner in launching these smart glasses, possibly as early as 2024. The company's initial iteration reportedly will not feature an AR display, but future models might include this technology, competing directly with offerings from Apple and Meta.
Samsung has also announced collaboration efforts with Google on software and with design brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, indicating a strong emphasis on both function and form.
Technology and Market Implications
These developments signal a significant shift in how translation services are integrated into wearable technology. With growing collaboration between industry leaders, the market for smart glasses is poised for expansion, driven by innovations in real-time translation and enhanced user experience.
