OpenAI has launched its AI-based video generator app, Sora, for Android users in select regions, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Sora initially debuted on iOS in September, marking its expansion into the global Android market. The app is not yet available in India.
Features and Functionality
The Sora app utilizes OpenAI's Sora 2 model to create realistic and controllable AI-generated videos and audio. Users can create, remix, and share clips directly from their devices. Sora's feed emphasizes content created by friends, similar to platforms like TikTok, enhancing its social interaction aspect.
Key features include the ability to generate videos from text prompts and edit existing clips. The Cameos feature allows users to place themselves in AI-generated scenes using short videos and voice recordings, with options to delete or revoke any recorded appearances.
Subscription Plans and Limits
Sora offers different usage limits based on subscription levels. Free, ChatGPT Plus, and Teams subscribers can create up to 30 videos daily, whereas Pro users can generate up to 100 videos. Additional video generations can be purchased in bundles of ten for $4 each via Apple’s App Store.
Market Impact
With its launch on Android, Sora significantly widens its user base, particularly in the North American and Asian markets. The new safety tools, including content moderation and parental controls, provide further appeal to a diverse audience. OpenAI’s strategic rollout emphasizes safety and customization, potentially elevating its competitive edge against other AI video platforms like Meta's Vibes.
