Arattai Surges to Top of Indian App Stores Amid Privacy Concerns

28 Sep 2025

Arattai's Rise and Features

India's homegrown messaging app, Arattai, has emerged as the top choice among digital users, surpassing global giants in app store rankings. Developed by Zoho in 2021, Arattai, the Tamil word for "chat," originally started as an experimental project but has rapidly gained traction. In an era where data privacy and tech sovereignty are of paramount concern, Arattai's identity as a 'spyware-free, made-in-India' messenger has struck a chord with a wary user base.

The app offers a comprehensive suite of features, including one-to-one and group chats, voice notes, media sharing, and voice and video calls. It extends support across various devices, with a focus on enhancing user privacy. While end-to-end encryption is currently limited to calls, Zoho reassures users that chat encryption is in progress. Unlike many of its competitors, Arattai's business model refrains from monetizing personal data, promising a commitment to privacy.

Support and Challenges

Arattai's ascent was notably boosted after an endorsement from India's Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan, who encouraged citizens to adopt indigenous digital platforms. The app also received praise from noted tech commentator Vivek Wadhwa, who lauded its capacity as a potential 'WhatsApp killer'.

However, the journey has not been without challenges. The exponential growth in users has put pressure on infrastructure, leading to issues like delayed OTPs, slower contact synchronization, and occasional sign-up delays. Zoho is actively working to expand its servers to address these growing pains, ensuring the app can handle increased demand efficiently.

Long-term Prospects

While topping app charts is a significant milestone, Arattai faces the tougher challenge of user retention. WhatsApp, with its deeply rooted presence in India, boasts over 500 million users and an entrenched habit of use. Arattai must convert its soaring downloads into habitual usage patterns, fostering long-term trust among users. Bridging feature gaps, especially in chat encryption, and maintaining performance reliability are pivotal for sustaining its momentum.

As Zoho basks in the limelight, the real test lies ahead in proving Arattai can consistently deliver on its privacy and performance promises, potentially reshaping the messaging landscape in India.
