Apple Introduces AppMigrationKit for iOS-to-Android Transfers

26 Oct 2025

Apple is testing a new framework called AppMigrationKit to simplify the transfer of app data from iOS to Android devices. This initiative is being evaluated alongside the upcoming iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1 releases. The framework is specifically designed for migrations between Apple and non-Apple platforms, such as Android, but excludes migrations within the Apple ecosystem.

Migrating Across Platforms

AppMigrationKit enables users to migrate on-device app data when switching from iOS to Android. Traditionally, app data often remains on the original device, creating friction for those switching platforms. The kit facilitates seamless data export from iOS apps for transfer to non-Apple devices, filling a significant gap.

Once app developers integrate AppMigrationKit, users migrating to a new Android device will experience reduced data loss. Notably, apps can automatically access cloud-stored data post-migration, ensuring continuity.

Integration and Availability

The AppMigrationKit is currently in beta testing and could be released with iOS 26.1's launch. Apple aims to roll out a "Transfer to Android" feature, while Google is working on a "Transfer to iPhone" tool. Both companies' efforts to enhance cross-platform migration will likely reduce switching hesitancy, allowing for smoother transitions between ecosystems.

  • AppMigrationKit streamlines data transfer from iOS to Android.
  • Testing occurs alongside iOS 26.1 and iPadOS 26.1 launches.
  • Framework exclusively targets non-Apple platform migrations.
  • Potential public release with iOS 26.1.
  • Complementary tools by Apple and Google could encourage platform switching.
