LineageOS 23.0 has launched, bringing Android 16 to more than 100 devices. Despite Google not yet releasing QPR1 source code, LineageOS decided to proceed with a baseline version under the 23.0 label.
New Features in LineageOS 23.0
This release incorporates Android 16 features like predictive back navigation, enforced edge-to-edge displays, and enhanced app adaptivity. Updates include Ultra HDR and RAW capture in the Aperture camera app, a redesigned notification island, and advanced protection devices support. The Twelve music app now includes a shuffle feature and Jellyfin integration, while the newly introduced Catapult TV launcher offers an ad-free user experience aimed at simplicity and speed.
Technical Enhancements and Challenges
Under the hood, LineageOS added QEMU-based virtualization groundwork and better mainline Linux kernel compatibility. However, some features, such as parts of Desktop Mode, remain unavailable due to dependencies on the yet-to-be-released QPR1 components. Additionally, Google's shift to risk-based security updates, now publishing only high-risk vulnerabilities monthly, affects LineageOS's ability to deliver timely security patches.
Support and Future Directions
The older 21.x series is being phased out, with no new devices added. Devices from this series will stay on the 22.2 branch as LineageOS grows the 23.0 lineup. The full list of changes and improvements is available in the official changelog.
