X has launched a comprehensive update to its Chat platform, introducing enhanced features like encrypted messaging, video calling, and file sharing for iOS and web users. An Android version is forthcoming.
Feature Enhancements
The new X Chat platform replaces basic direct messages with a suite of features including voice and video calling, message editing, and screenshot notifications. Users can now also enjoy disappearing messages and end-to-end encryption, although metadata remains unencrypted.
Security Focus
While Chat supports encrypted group messages and media, it lacks protections against man-in-the-middle attacks. X is developing tools to help users verify the integrity of encrypted chats. The chat service emphasizes security, operating without ads or tracking.
Rollout and Compatibility
Currently available on iOS and the web, X Chat will soon expand to Android. Unlike previous limited encryption options discontinued in May, the new iteration enhances user privacy with features designed to maintain confidentiality.
