Google Introduces Universal Commerce Protocol for Retail

12 Jan 2026

Google has launched the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) to standardize how AI agents handle product search, checkout, and payments. UCP enables seamless interaction between AI agents, retailers, and payment providers. Major partners include Shopify, Etsy, Target, American Express, Flipkart, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa, with PayPal integration pending.

Initial Rollout in the U.S.

UCP will initially power checkout in Google's Search AI Mode and the Gemini app, utilizing Google Pay and Google Wallet for transactions. This U.S. launch marks a significant step in AI-driven retail experiences.

New Features and Partnerships

Google introduces Business Agents, virtual assistants to answer consumer questions, and Direct Offers, allowing businesses to present exclusive promotions within AI-driven shopping. These features are designed to enhance customer engagement and streamline the purchasing process.

Expansion Plans

Google's future plans for UCP include broadening retailer support and adding features like enhanced product discovery and automatic loyalty rewards. The aim is to facilitate a fully integrated AI-led shopping experience.
