Google Wallet has significantly broadened its functionality, integrating with travel, healthcare, and identification services.
Expanded Digital Integration
Google Wallet's evolution from a payment app to a comprehensive digital wallet began in 2022. Since then, Google has incorporated multiple features, allowing users to store a wide range of digital passes within the app. For example, boarding passes in the Wallet now update automatically with real-time travel information. This feature has expanded by 2025 to include train tickets from Indian Railways and Canada's Via Rail. These digital updates help improve travel by displaying live changes, such as delays or gate alterations, directly to the user’s phone.
ID and Insurance Cards
Health insurance cards can now be saved for offline access, making them more reliable in critical situations. Likewise, auto insurance companies offer digital passes for proof of insurance, which can be saved directly in the Wallet. This convenience is mirrored in Google's effort to digitize smaller cards like library and gym memberships.
Digital Driver’s Licenses and Passports
Google Wallet now supports mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) in various US states, adhering to federal verification standards. These can be used for identification at select TSA checkpoints. A beta version is being tested to turn US passports into digital IDs, simplifying airport security checks.
Power of the Wallet API
The Google Wallet API, available for free, allows partners like airlines and hotels to create Wallet passes, increasing the reach of digital passes. The Save to Google Wallet button lets developers enhance their apps or emails, providing users with live updates.
