LibrePods, a new app, unlocks key AirPods features for Android users, mimicking Apple device compatibility.
Features and Compatibility
LibrePods allows Android users to access features typically reserved for Apple devices. These include:
- Ear detection to pause music
- Head Gestures for calls
- Conversational Awareness for volume adjustment
- Switching noise control modes
- Battery level checks and accessibility customization
The app, developed by Kavish Devar, reverse-engineers Apple's protocols, making Android devices appear as iPhones or iPads to AirPods. LibrePods supports all AirPods models, including AirPods Max and AirPods Pro, but excludes heart rate monitoring capabilities.
Technical Requirements
To use LibrePods, Android phones must be rooted with the Xposed framework due to constraints in Android's Bluetooth stack. However, OnePlus and Oppo devices with ColorOS or OxygenOS 16 can operate the app without root, though advanced settings may still require it.
Limitations and Considerations
Not all features are available on earlier AirPods models. Additionally, certain functions, like customizing Transparency mode, necessitate a rooted device for full operation.
