Meta has launched new scam warning features on WhatsApp and Messenger, focusing on safeguarding older adults who are frequently targeted by scammers. Starting 2023-10-10, WhatsApp alerts users if they attempt to share their screen with individuals not in their contact list, advising against sharing sensitive information.
WhatsApp's New Alert System
WhatsApp now includes an interstitial alert during screen-sharing attempts with contacts lacking a long chat history or unknown to the user. This alert encourages users to be cautious about revealing sensitive details.
Fraudsters often exploit older adults by coercing them into revealing private information, such as through fake tech support or financial scams. This measure by Meta is designed to prevent such schemes by prompting timely warnings.
Messenger's Enhanced Scam Detection
Messenger is testing improved systems to detect scams through behavior and content analysis. If a chat appears suspicious, users receive alerts about potential scams, with options to block or report suspicious messages.
These alerts are designed to prevent scam compliance by addressing the issue as it arises, rather than providing generic advice. Meta's efforts have led to the disruption of about 8 million scam accounts.
Proactive Fraud Prevention Measures
Meta recommends several preventative actions, such as enabling WhatsApp's two-step verification and Messenger's privacy controls. Users are encouraged to verify any urgent requests through known numbers and to avoid sharing their screen with strangers.
The company is working with the National Elder Fraud Coordination Center to further protect seniors and advises families to educate older relatives on scam awareness. These alerts serve to create a pause, helping prevent irrevocable actions.
