In 2023, Megan Ellis revamped her app usage to improve productivity and privacy. She switched browsers, adopted focused apps, and ended streaks.
Browser and Password Manager Shift
Ellis grew frustrated with Chrome's extension limitations and shifted to Brave on mobile. On desktops, she utilizes both Brave and Firefox for ad blocking and alternative search engines. Additionally, she adopted a standalone password manager, appreciating its ease in generating secure passwords, albeit its free plan lacked payment information storage.
Self-Hosting and Simplifying Apps
To boost privacy, Ellis began self-hosting services, using apps like Immich and Donetick, accessible as progressive web apps. She also streamlined her app choice: opting for specialized tools such as a plant-watering reminder and a recurring payments app over complex systems.
Quitting Unneeded Apps
Ellis stopped using apps that no longer fit her needs, such as CapCut due to paywalls and intrusive ads, as well as a language app that altered its energy system. She also ended long app streaks, finding them anxiety-inducing, freeing herself from unnecessary engagement pressure.
