Google has taken action against several Android applications infected with GhostAd adware, which were causing battery and data drain on users' devices. The move aims to enhance device performance and protect users from unwanted activity on their phones.
Infected Apps and User Impact
According to security firm Check Point, the GhostAd adware was found in at least 15 applications, including popular utilities and emoji-editing tools. Among them, the GenMoji Studio app notably reached the number two spot in the Play Store's Top Free Tools category before being removed. These infected apps created a hidden advertising engine that continued running even after users closed their devices, leading to excessive consumption of battery and mobile data.
Users affected by these apps reported several issues, including disappearing app icons, continual pop-up advertisements, and slower device performance. Many also faced difficulties when trying to uninstall the problematic apps.
Removal and Prevention Measures
Google has removed the compromised apps from the Play Store. However, users who have already installed these applications need to delete them manually. It is recommended that users review app reviews, verify developer reputation, and check app permissions carefully before installing new applications to avoid such issues in the future.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance for Android users to maintain optimal device performance and security.
