KakaoTalk to Introduce Instagram-Style Features

25 Aug 2025

In a strategic move to enhance user engagement, KakaoTalk, South Korea's leading messaging app, is poised to roll out new features akin to Instagram. During a recent second-quarter earnings call, CEO Chung Shin-a unveiled plans to integrate an Instagram-like stories feed within the app's contact list. This innovative feature aims to allow users to share updates about their daily lives and short-form videos, enhancing the social experience within the platform.

Enhancing User Profiles

The revamped user profile will showcase a new feed located at the bottom of the contacts tab. This feed will amalgamate various content such as daily life updates, birthday notifications, and a selection of media shared across group chats, fostering a space focused on relationship-based content. The visual and functional similarities to Instagram's Stories are evident, outlining Kakao's intention to keep users engaged in familiar and accessible ways.

Diversifying Content

Recognizing the importance of varied and engaging media, Kakao plans to develop a dedicated space for short-form videos. A creator-friendly studio will accompany this feature, designed to support the production of diverse content. By collaborating with Kakao affiliates, the company aims to secure exclusive and original content, setting it apart from competitors.

Previewing at If Kakao

These features are scheduled to be showcased at If Kakao, a significant event taking place in September, with an anticipated formal release by year-end. The updates come at a crucial time, as recent statistics reveal a decline in the average monthly usage time on the app—from 822.7 minutes in May 2021 to 686 minutes by January this year. Such enhancements are strategically targeted at promoting increased app interaction.

KakaoTalk's latest iteration reflects a broader industry trend where messaging platforms strive to incorporate social media elements, blurring the lines between simple messaging and comprehensive digital interaction ecosystems. As the competition with global platforms like Instagram intensifies, Kakao's upcoming features represent a decisive step in maintaining its leading position in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
