Google is transitioning its Weather app on Android to a redesigned experience within Google Search. The change has been spotted by users who report that the Weather shortcut now redirects to Google Search instead of opening the standalone app.
New Search-Based Interface
The Google Weather app, recognized by its sun icon with a G badge, traditionally offered comprehensive weather details like the Froggy mascot, current temperature, and forecasts. Now, the information including hourly forecasts and in-depth metrics like Wind and Humidity is migrating to Google Search, which has received a mobile UI overhaul.
- The Weather app shortcut now leads to Google Search results as of 2023.
- The transition features an hourly forecast integration directly above the mascot.
- Expandable details cover Precipitation, Wind, Humidity, and Air Quality metrics.
Gradual Rollout Process
The migration to Google Search from the standalone Weather app is being carried out server-side and gradually. Currently, many users can still access the standalone app through the "View all details" option, but this feature may disappear as the update progresses.
Implications for Wear OS
The move does not impact the Wear OS Weather app, which remains available for wearable devices. Google encourages users to utilize the platform's built-in app for weather information on wearable devices.
