SmartTube, a third-party YouTube client for Android TVs, was disabled by Google, citing a security issue with its digital signature. A new version is now available for sideloading.
Security Concerns and Impact
The popular app provided features absent in the official YouTube client, such as live chat on TVs and picture-in-picture mode. Despite being removed, the app remains installed but disabled on devices. This follows Google's detection of an exposed digital signature, which compromised app authenticity.
Developer Response and New Versions
The developer, yuliskov, is addressing the issue by implementing a new digital signature requiring a change in app identifiers. Consequently, the existing app will not receive updates, while the updated version requires manual sideloading. Available through input codes, version 30.56 can be installed via the Stable or Beta channels, but users are advised against disabling Google Play Protect as this guards against potential threats.
The situation underscores the ongoing pressure on developers to maintain app security, particularly when dealing with popular platforms like Android TV. Users must navigate these challenges to ensure app functionality and safety.
