YouTube Music Tests AI Backgrounds for Lyric Cards

06 Jan 2026

YouTube Music is testing a new feature that allows users to create AI-generated backgrounds for lyric cards on both iOS and Android devices. This experimental change is designed to offer an alternative to the standard solid-color backgrounds.

Features and Availability

The AI background feature is currently available to both free and Premium users. When users wish to share a lyric card, a new AI background button appears for easy customization. Once a background is generated, users can refresh it using a dedicated icon to produce new variations.

These AI-generated images can be saved to the device or shared with other apps, broadening the customization options for users. The process begins with a “Creating with AI” warning, which requires acceptance. This rollout distinguishes YouTube Music from competitors like Genius lyric cards by offering dynamic visual options.

Design and Usability

Lyric cards now include a small album art image, the track title, the artist name, and a notable YouTube Music logo. Users have the choice between solid color and AI-generated backgrounds. To indicate AI capabilities, a sparkle icon has been added to the Share button within the app.

While the variety in backgrounds introduces creative flexibility for users, Google notes that AI-generated images may not always align with a song's theme or lyrical content. Despite this, the feature aims to enhance the visual appeal of lyric sharing on YouTube Music.
