Android users will soon receive a battery warning on Google Play Store for apps that may use more battery than expected. This feature stems from a new battery-impact metric designed by Google and Samsung.
Battery Metric Explanation
The update to Android Vitals centers on detecting "excessive partial wake locks." These occur when apps keep a device active even when the screen is off, leading to increased battery drain. Google sets a limit: an app is flagged if it holds wake locks over two cumulative hours within 24 hours.
- Non-exempt wake locks over 2 hours in 24 hours trigger a warning.
- Exemptions include audio playback and user-initiated file transfers.
- If 5% of an app's users exceed the threshold in 28 days, it is flagged.
Upcoming Changes for Developers
Starting 2026-03-01, flagged apps will see a red "high background activity" label on their Google Play listing. They will also have reduced visibility, not appearing in key recommendation sections. Google aims to drive developers to optimize background behavior, improving overall battery life and transparency for users.
