WhatsApp is set to integrate third-party messaging support for BirdyChat and Haiket in the European Union. This move follows the enforcement of the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) in 2023.
Expansion Across Europe
The integration will allow users across Europe to exchange messages, images, voice notes, videos, and files between the services on both Android and iOS. To comply with the DMA, partner apps must ensure the same level of end-to-end encryption as WhatsApp provides.
User Control and Notifications
When the integration becomes available, WhatsApp will notify users within the app settings, explaining how to enable or disable the feature. Users will retain full control, with options to opt in or decline the functionality.
