Android App Archiving Boosts Storage Efficiency

24 Oct 2025

Android has introduced app archiving to enhance storage efficiency for users. This feature removes seldom-used parts of apps while retaining data, ensuring easy restoration.

Automatic and Manual Archiving

Users can enable automatic archiving through the Google Play Store by tapping their profile icon, navigating to Settings, expanding General, and toggling "Automatically archive apps." Manual archiving is also available by going to Settings, selecting Apps, choosing the desired app, and tapping Archive. Archived apps appear grayed out in the app drawer with an arrow icon.

Restoration Process

Restoring an archived app is straightforward. Users can tap the app in the app drawer or go to Settings > Apps > [app] and press Restore. This process requires an internet connection and enough free storage space, as the Play Store will re-download the necessary files.

Custom Archiving Preferences

To prevent automatic archiving for specific apps, users can navigate to Settings > Apps, select the desired app, and toggle off "Manage app if unused." This allows for tailored app management according to individual needs.
