New Dragon Quest Mobile Game Announced with Caution

17 Sep 2025

Square Enix, the acclaimed developer known for its iconic role-playing games, has revealed its newest addition to the Dragon Quest franchise, a mobile title named Dragon Quest Smash/Grow. Building on the series' legacy, this game introduces players to a dynamic roguelike action RPG experience. With top-down combat as its core, players are expected to choose from a selection of "Blessings" after various encounters, aiming to bolster their abilities for each specific run.

The excitement among fans is palpable as Square Enix prepares for a closed beta testing phase scheduled for Android and iOS devices from October 14 to October 21. While this offers a sneak peek into the game's mechanics and gameplay, enthusiasts will have to wait until a global launch, slated for 2026, to experience the full scope of Dragon Quest Smash/Grow.

Cautious Enthusiasm

Despite the anticipation, there is a palpable sense of caution surrounding this release. Historically, mobile offerings from the Dragon Quest portfolio have not enjoyed the longevity many hoped for. Previous titles from Square Enix have ended service relatively soon after their introductions to the market.

The skepticism around Smash/Grow isn't entirely unfounded. In contrast to mobile endeavors, console projects under the Dragon Quest banner seem to boast a more promising trajectory. For instance, remakes of the early games in the series as well as the eagerly anticipated Dragon Quest VII Reimagined have been met with enthusiasm and trust by fans and industry insiders alike.

It is this track record of successful console adaptations that has led many to place their faith more readily in console titles rather than mobile ones. The longevity and sustained support these projects generally receive stand as testament to their importance within the broader Dragon Quest universe.

Looking Forward

As the gaming community eagerly awaits further developments, questions linger about how Square Enix plans to maintain the interest and viability of Dragon Quest Smash/Grow in the long run. Will it break the mold and offer a mobile experience that rivals its console counterparts in quality and endurance? Only time will tell.

What is clear, however, is that Dragon Quest remains a cornerstone of RPG gaming across platforms. As Square Enix continues to expand its universe, fans hold their breath hoping the beloved franchise will once again strike gold, whether it be on mobile screens or expansive console adventures.
