Arattai from Zoho Gains Traction Amid Privacy Concerns

30 Sep 2025

Arattai, meaning "casual chat" in Tamil, is Zoho's ambitious messenger app that aims to rival giants like WhatsApp. First introduced in January 2021, the app's launch coincided with a wave of concerns over WhatsApp's updated privacy policy. Despite initial struggles to build a user base, Arattai has recently gained significant momentum.

Government Endorsement and Growing Popularity

A notable turning point for Arattai was when Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan publicly advocated for the use of this homegrown platform, sparking a surge in downloads. As a result, Arattai rapidly climbed to the No. 1 position on both iOS and Android app stores, a milestone that has put it in the spotlight.

Features and Current Limitations

The app boasts a robust suite of functionalities, including text messaging, voice and video calls, media sharing, stories, and channels. However, while its voice and video calls are secured with end-to-end encryption, similar protection for text chats is still under development. This represents a significant gap compared to WhatsApp, which offers full chat encryption.

Zoho's commitment to a "privacy-first" approach distinguishes Arattai. The company promises not to monetize personal information, reassuring users who value digital sovereignty and are wary of data surveillance. This promise, alongside the app's local roots under the "Made in India" banner, has resonated with its growing user base.

Challenges and the Path Forward

The app's rapid rise in popularity has brought some growing pains. Users have reported delays in receiving one-time passwords (OTPs), issues with contact synchronization, and occasional disruptions in calls due to server overload. Moving forward, industry analysts suggest that the success of Arattai's growth phase largely depends on the implementation of end-to-end encryption for text chats. Without it, the app remains a promising challenger.

Despite these hurdles, Arattai has managed to capture significant attention and has built momentum as a viable alternative in the crowded messaging app market. As Zoho continues to refine and enhance the app's security and usability, the company is likely to see further growth in user engagement and adoption.
