OpenAI's Sora, an AI-powered video creation app, is now accessible to Android users in regions including the United States, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. This follows its initial release on iOS in September, where it quickly gained popularity on the App Store.
Android Rollout and Key Features
The Android version preserves the features of its iOS counterpart, notably the Cameos feature. Sora aims to broaden video creation access by enabling users to generate videos from text prompts without the need for cameras or editing software. OpenAI has announced that Europe will be the next region for rollout, although specific dates remain undisclosed.
Monetization strategies are also in place, with ten extra video creations available for purchase at $4, over the daily free limit. Currently, the app allows 30 free videos daily, whereas Pro users can generate up to 100 videos per day.
Competitive Landscape and Future Plans
Sora's expansion comes as competition intensifies with rivals like Meta and Google entering the AI-generated video space. OpenAI continues to innovate with new features, introducing cameo characters for pets and objects, and planning further enhancements as the app gains traction on Android. Bill Peebles, head of Sora, acknowledges that the current free limit is temporary due to limited computing power.
