Google Messages Gets Material 3 Expressive Design Update

18 Oct 2025

Google Messages has completed its transition to the Material 3 Expressive design, bringing a new visual style to Android users. This update includes changes to the account switcher menu, which is now split into two groups for better navigation under 'More from this app'.

Design and Functionality Updates

The redesigned account switcher showcases larger user avatars and includes items like Your Profile, Archived, and Help & Feedback, grouped for ease of access. While these changes might seem minor, they align with Google's vision for visual consistency across its applications. The update is already present in the beta version 20251006_02_RC00 and is extending to the stable version.

Apart from visual alterations, Google is also enhancing functionality in Google Messages. Users can expect new features such as the Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, which aims to revamp chat-related capabilities.

Implications for Users

Although the account switcher modification may seem redundant for an app where users rarely change accounts, it signals Google's commitment to uniformity. The more organized menu and stylized design present a cohesive user experience across Google’s ecosystems.

Overall, these updates in Google Messages reflect a modest but meaningful step in aligning with Google's broader Material 3 design philosophy, potentially paving the way for further integrations and functionality enhancements.
