Nordic Semiconductor has introduced Bluetooth Channel Sounding support in its Android nRF Toolbox app, enhancing its nRF54L Series SoCs for developers. This addition showcases the seamless integration between Google's Channel Sounding API and Nordic’s hardware.
New Capabilities and Applications
The latest feature enables reliable distance estimation up to 20 meters with a precision of ±1 meter. This advancement supports applications in item tracking, such as locating medical equipment, tracking employee locations in industrial settings, and monitoring customer movement in retail and museums.
Channel Sounding allows for improved distance ranging, positioning, and presence detection, making it an ideal solution for precision tracking.
Interoperability and Support
The functionality was successfully demonstrated using an nRF54L15 Development Kit as a channel sounding reflector in conjunction with a Google Pixel 10. This demonstration confirms interoperability between Android’s Channel Sounding API and Nordic's hardware and Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) stack.
- Channel Sounding feature available from 2023-09-25.
- Compatible with all nRF54L Series SoCs.
- nRF Connect SDK provides necessary samples.
Petter Myhre, Product Marketing Director at Nordic Semiconductor, emphasized the importance of this advancement, noting, “Bluetooth Channel Sounding is one of the biggest enhancements to Bluetooth LE, and Nordic is pleased to be leading its adoption.”
