Fortnite has returned to Android devices via the Google Play Store in the US following a legal settlement between Epic Games and Google. This event marks the first time since 2020 that the game is available for direct download from the Play Store.
Legal Settlement Details
The reintroduction of Fortnite follows a settlement in a lengthy legal dispute centered on in-app purchase commissions. Epic Games had been in a legal battle with both Apple and Google since 2020, after it bypassed their 30% commission on in-app purchases. This led to the removal of Fortnite from their respective app stores.
Although Epic Games has resolved the issue with Google, the game remains unavailable on the Apple App Store. The settlement with Google follows a July ruling where the Google Play Store was found in violation of antitrust laws.
Beyond US Borders
Currently, only users in the United States can download Fortnite directly from the Google Play Store. Epic Games has advised international players to "stay tuned for news" regarding wider availability.
The return of Fortnite has been well-received by players in the US, offering a simpler alternative to sideloading, which was previously the only method available for Android users to access the game.
Long-term Impact
The ramifications of this settlement could extend beyond Android availability. Epic Games’ CEO, Tim Sweeney, sees this as a step towards untaxed competition in global iOS payments, as the court ruled against certain Apple practices. Sweeney referred to it as an indicator that the "Apple Tax is dead in the USA."
