Android 17 is set to introduce a native App Lock feature, enhancing privacy by hiding notifications' contents for locked apps.
Privacy Enhancements in Notifications
Google is actively working on the App Lock feature for Android 17. Leaks from the Canary build indicate that notifications from locked apps will still appear but without key information. For example, while you may receive a WhatsApp notification, the message content will remain hidden until the app is unlocked.
- Lock: Users can manually or automatically lock apps.
- Privacy: Notifications show, but content is hidden.
- Biometric: Unlocking requires biometric authentication.
Expected Integration and Impact
The App Lock API should offer a system-level solution, eliminating the need for third-party apps or custom launchers to protect sensitive information. Designed for banking, messaging, and work-related apps, it aims to standardize privacy controls across the platform.
While Google has not officially announced the feature, if development proceeds smoothly, Android 17 should launch with this native app-locking system, benefitting Pixel and other OEM devices using the stock OS.
