Streamlining Gmail: Enhancing the Android App Experience

18 Sep 2025

The Gmail Android app has seen a remarkably successful year in 2025. With a series of new features and timely updates, users are rediscovering the app's potential and finding better functionality. For someone who had shifted to an alternative email client, returning to Gmail was made even more appealing by making a small, yet impactful tweak: removing the Meet tab.

In its previous iterations, the Gmail interface included two tabs positioned at the bottom of the screen — one for the inbox and another devoted to Google Meet. For users who rarely engage with Meet, this tab was little more than an unnecessary use of space, contributing to a cluttered interface. Restoring simplicity required only a few steps, but the results were substantial.

Steps to Remove the Meet Tab

  1. First, access the menu by tapping the button situated in the top-left corner of the Gmail app.
  2. Proceed to scroll to the bottom and select Settings.
  3. Select your specific email address.
  4. Navigate down to the Meet section.
  5. Locate and uncheck the checkbox labeled "Show the Meet tab for video calling."

Upon unchecking this option, Gmail instantly reverts to showcasing the inbox minus the Meet tab and the bottom navigation bar, resulting in a more expansive view of emails. The change is designed to streamline the user experience, making the app interface appear cleaner and more efficient.

For those managing several accounts via the app, repeating these steps for each account is required to ensure a uniform look across all inboxes. Additionally, users of Google Workspace accounts might encounter a Chat tab. In such instances, users should explore the General section of the settings and similarly uncheck "Show the chat tab" to achieve a minimalist layout.

This customization feature empowers users to exercise greater control over their email environment, allowing them to focus on what matters most — their emails. It appears that by prioritizing user-friendly changes like these, Gmail is responding adeptly to the evolving needs of its user base in 2025.
