KakaoTalk Dominates Mobile Messaging in South Korea

09 Jan 2026

KakaoTalk remains the dominant mobile messaging app in South Korea, according to a January 2025 survey.

Survey Findings

The survey conducted by NASMEDIA showed KakaoTalk leading in usage among South Korean mobile messenger users. Conducted from January 13-15, 2025, it included 1,876 respondents aged 15-59. The method was an online access panel allowing multiple answers.

Results indicated that nearly every internet user in South Korea with a compatible device uses KakaoTalk. User numbers have generally risen over the years, despite fluctuations such as in 2018.

Service Expansion and Growth

Kakao Corp, the developer behind KakaoTalk, offers an array of services accessible via the app. These include features related to navigation, transportation, entertainment, and financial services.

KakaoBank, a digital bank launched by Kakao Corp in 2017, witnessed substantial growth by the end of 2024, reflecting the expansion of Kakao's ecosystem.

Market Influence

The omnipresence of KakaoTalk in South Korea underscores its influence in the digital landscape. By integrating various services, Kakao strengthens its foothold in the technology and finance sectors.
