Android 17 Introduces Gamepad Button Mapping Feature

10 Dec 2025

Android is introducing a new feature in its upcoming version 17, allowing users to remap gamepad buttons for improved gaming flexibility. This feature is currently visible in the latest Android Canary build and focuses on game controllers compatible with devices such as Sony's DualSense.

Gamepad Settings Exploration

The new settings are accessible via the Bluetooth device details menu under 'Game Controller settings'. It includes sections for Keys and Axes. These sections allow users to configure remappable buttons and directional inputs for a more tailored gaming experience. For example, pressing the A button can be set to send the B button's signal, changing how Android interacts with apps and games.

Customization and Usability

The interface allows customization by opening dialogs for each button and input. However, the current menu does not reflect platform-specific button labels, potentially causing user confusion. Suggestions for improvement include better reflecting controller layouts and offering simpler input selection methods. This opens new possibilities for Android gaming, particularly on PCs and non-touchscreen devices.

Availability and Future Development

This feature targets Android 17, and while refining, Google aims to enhance the UI and functionality before its public release. This update is expected to improve gaming experiences by increasing the native support for controllers across Android devices.
