WhatsApp Tests Cross-Platform Messaging in Europe

29 Oct 2025

WhatsApp is testing a new cross-platform messaging feature, primarily targeting users in European countries. This initiative aligns with the EU Digital Markets Act and allows interaction between WhatsApp and third-party chat apps.

New Group and Privacy Options

The latest beta introduces "Third-party groups," enabling users to engage in group chats across different messaging platforms. Users can control who adds them to such groups, ensuring privacy through selective participation.

The supported content of these third-party interactions includes text messaging, voice notes, and file sharing, such as photos and documents. However, more advanced WhatsApp features like status updates and stories will likely remain restricted to the core app.

Expanded Reach and Future Rollout

Testing is currently underway on Android devices. A broader rollout is first expected in Europe, adhering to regulatory requirements, with potential expansion to iOS and other regions later. Users can choose to keep third-party chats separate or integrate them with existing conversations.

This development is a strategic step for WhatsApp, providing users with greater flexibility and options for communication across platforms.
