Apple has introduced Google Cast support to its AppleTV app for Android devices with version 2.2. This update allows Android users to stream Apple TV shows and movies to Cast-enabled devices, such as Chromecasts and Google TV–powered televisions.
Expanded Streaming Capability
By adding a persistent Cast button next to the profile icon, the update lists available Cast targets and begins playback on the selected screen while maintaining controls on the phone. The app continues to offer recognized casting features, including play/pause, volume, and language preferences, as well as a miniplayer and full-screen controller, filling a significant feature gap.
This change brings the AppleTV app closer to parity with Apple devices, allowing playback to reach up to 4K with HDR and immersive audio, subject to device, network, and content availability.
User Convenience and Market Reach
With Android's substantial global market share, this update lessens the friction for users who lack Apple TV hardware, integrating well with Google Play Billing for simpler user sign-ups. While it contrasts with Netflix's recent reduction in mobile casting features, the move suggests Apple’s strategic shift towards enhancing cross-platform user convenience.
The update to AppleTV on Android, available via the Google Play Store, underscores Apple's intent to accommodate diverse user bases by offering familiar functionalities popular among streaming services.
