Surfshark has officially ceased support for Android 5.0 (Lollipop), requiring users to upgrade to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or newer for app compatibility. This shift aims to focus the company's resources on enhancing security and features aligned with modern Android versions.
Updated Compatibility Requirements
As of now, devices operating on Android 5.0 are deemed legacy and will not receive further app updates, impacting security, features, and app stability. Although older apps may still function temporarily, their effectiveness could be compromised due to server-side changes or emerging vulnerabilities.
Surfshark emphasizes that this change reduces technical debt and allows better allocation of resources towards current security and development efforts. The company confirms ongoing support from Android 6.0 through Android 15, with Android 16 (Baklava) also supported.
User Upgrade Recommendations
While the Surfshark app won't abruptly cease functioning on older versions, the company advises upgrading to devices capable of running Android 6.0 or later for optimal safety and functionality. For those unable to switch devices, Surfshark proposes alternatives, such as:
- Issuing WireGuard config files from the account dashboard and using the WireGuard app.
- Utilizing the OpenVPN Connect app with Surfshark credentials.
- Setting up the VPN on a compatible router for network-wide protection.
Most subscribers will require no immediate action unless they wish to maintain app security and access to newly developed features.
