Android 16 Beta Adds Location Indicator on Pixel Phones

18 Dec 2025

Android 16 QPR3 Beta has introduced a live and interactive location indicator designed for Tensor-powered Pixel phones. This feature, now available in the Android Beta Program, aims to improve user control over app location permissions.

New Location Indicator

The new feature in Android 16 QPR3 Beta includes a blue location icon in the status bar, which users can tap to see which apps are accessing their location. This transparency allows users to switch between precise and approximate location settings, limit background access, or disable location permissions entirely.

This enhancement builds upon an earlier Google experiment, now with improved visuals, and complements existing microphone and camera indicators on Android devices.

Addressing Privacy Concerns

Regulators have expressed concerns about geolocation data overcollection and resale. This live attribution tool empowers users to identify apps collecting location data in real-time, offering immediate actionability to protect their privacy.

Overall, the update signals a modest yet meaningful step towards enhancing privacy controls on Android devices, especially for those engaging in the Android Beta Program.

Future Availability

Initially available for Tensor-powered Pixel phones via the Android Beta Program, the feature's wider rollout will depend on other manufacturers adopting Android 16 for their devices. Broader deployment aims to strengthen privacy features across the Android ecosystem, responding to both user demand and regulatory pressures.
