Google Play to Highlight Apps with Excessive Wakelocks Starting 2026

11 Nov 2025

Starting from 2026-03-01, the Google Play Store will begin warning users about Android apps that cause excessive battery drain due to improper use of wakelocks. This change aims to improve app performance and battery efficiency on Android devices.

New Performance Guidelines

Google has introduced new technical quality guidelines that focus on addressing wakelocks. Wakelocks are a mechanism that prevents a phone from entering sleep mode, which is necessary for certain tasks like playing music or downloading files. However, when mismanaged, wakelocks can significantly drain battery life. Google's guidelines will flag any app that shows excessive use of wakelocks in more than 5% of user sessions over 28 days.

Developer Impact and Visibility

Apps that do not meet the new guidelines may receive a public warning badge on their Play Store listing, indicating potential battery drain. These apps may also face reduced visibility in Play Store recommendations. Currently, Google's quality metrics already incorporate data on crashes and freezes. The inclusion of battery efficiency marks an expansion in Google's efforts to ensure high-quality app performance.

Expectations and Developer Response

Developers are expected to optimize their applications to avoid these new penalties. Failure to do so not only risks reduced discovery within the Play Store but could also lead to a decline in user satisfaction due to faster battery depletion. This initiative pushes developers to balance functionality with battery use efficiency, ultimately benefiting Android users with longer-lasting device performance.
